hi! i'm a nyc-based artist who also paints people, flowers, and what i make into dinner for my friends.
My work is a search for the person within the face, what you glimpse in a frame in a family movie, someone who doesn’t know they’re on camera, and all their interior battles are on full display.
I have to work down to find it, begin with stuttering lines, smudge, erase, build a network of traces on the paper until assured strokes come as I reach toward the interiority of a subject. In the end, there is no single portrait, there are multiple exposures, layers of intention, restlessness, fear, indifference, confidence, all and everything all at once.
Working on paper is critical to my process, as it resists the complete erasure of the beginnings, abrades and buckles, the texture of the worked space contrasting with the empty white space into which my subject breathes.
It takes time to forge these connections, and time to see them when you look as a viewer. As you look, as you come to see the person looking out at you, perhaps you come to see yourself a bit more clearly as well.
